The first time that I had ever come across a bamboo utensil was about 5 years ago while shopping at a Whole Foods. I actual stopped to read about the company because I thought that it was a great concept! They looked nice as well. Oddly or maybe, conveniently for those who brought lunch from home to work, the item was sold as a single bamboo spoon. I also recall that around the same time there was an individually ran start-up who was looking to mass produce bikes made of bamboo to distribute in Africa and possibly sell here in the United States because of the plants sustainability and durability.
Bamboo, for many is the plant that brings to mind panda’s chomping down on as their favorite meal. Or, depending on if you live in a metropolitan area where there is a Chinatown, you may see them being sold, as decor or potted and placed around alters of stores, and restaurants. For me that is what I grew up relating bamboo to. I was born in Oakland which has a Chinatown and would be often taken to San Francisco to visit with family, which is where the largest Chinatown in the United States is located.
Bamboo was primarily associated with Chinese culture before I knew anything about its many uses. When I moved to Las Vegas I knew I wanted to live even more of a holistic, organic, sustainable lifestyle. Owning eco-friendly household items was a given factor of what would be included in that lifestyle. Both our eating utensils as well as cooking utensils are made from bamboo.
Reasons that I use bamboo kitchen utensils include; they are biodegradable, very easy to clean, decorative, the cooking utensils wont stick or scratch pans, and are long lasting.
